Self Esteem - Improving Your Internal Power

How do you see yourself when you look in a mirror?  Do you have a positive self-image of yourself?  Do you measure up to the other people in your peer group?  Are you confident in the way you look, how you hold yourself and your career?  When thinking about this concept you should take in affect three things.  The first is how attractive do you consider yourself to be?  The second one is; how interesting and fun do you think you are?  And last is; do you wish you could be different?

In our society there are a lot of external factors that contribute to our self esteem package.  One of the main external factors is the media and the way they dictate what is attractive and what the ideal person should be.  Mass media, which I hate to believe, is our ‘guide book’ to being the best.  We spend a significant portion of our lives trying to find the perfect person in what society views as a healthy sexual relationship.  Bottom line is that we strive to be the best and wind up competing with everyone for this stature.  We try to achieve the perfect image of ourselves which in reality could cause more damage than good.

You can improve your self esteem by analyzing the standards that we set for ourselves and create a plan to reach these goals.

First thing is to list the things you like and dislike about yourself.  This is a good starting point because you can identify the areas where improvement could be rectified.  Second is to think about all the negative things because we create a lot of expectations for ourselves base on how other people think.  The most common negative thought is; ‘I’m not attractive or smart enough.’  Some items on this list you can change while others you cannot.  Don’t dwell on the unchangeable but focus on things that you have control over.

Like I previous stated, focus on the things about yourself that you can change.  You can express yourself through new clothes, or a new diet and exercise program that will help you reach your physical goals.  Most of these goals will take time and require patience.  By setting small goals along the way will keep you focused and on target to the bigger goal.  You will find yourself more confident and energetic about yourself in the way you look and how you appear to other people.

The key to self esteem is to have good self awareness.  Keep in mind all the good qualities you have and start to change the bad ones.  Don’t worry too much on the things about yourself you can’t change because in time the ones that you did change will overshadow the negative.  And remember, always hold your head high, believe in yourself and you will be able to block-out all the negatives and enjoy a positive life.
